Music

Katie taught choir and band for 12 years in the public and private schools. She currently is a director with the Denver Children’s Choir, working with families in northwest Denver. She also directs a choir at Wheat Ridge Presbyterian church. Katie plays piano, trombone, ukulele, and guitar in addition to singing. She has a great love for classical music, jazz and the American songbook, and indie folk-rock.

As a private voice instructor, Katie has coached students for All-State choir and Jazz auditions, musical auditions, DSA auditions, and college auditions. She really enjoys helping students develop their singing voice while building the confidence it takes to come into your own as a singer.

ART SONG & COMPOSITION

I create music for the transformative effect on my physical and intellectual self. I attend concerts and perform in ensembles in order to be taken somewhere new emotionally; often somewhere beyond the realm of the mundane. The music I create has a healing power over me as well. I want to leave a performance or a writing session changed: a thinking, feeling, observing human at their best.

Current projects include a song cycle of poetry my father loved. He passed away when I was a child, but left me letters, novels, and poetry books. I am also distilling a children’s book into poetic language and beginning to write a musical. I enjoy setting poetry to music in the art song tradition and creating poetry from prose.

SONGWRITING

All of my compositions are characterized by a love of the human voice and a love of language. The combination of poetic voice with singing voice is what I find most transformational. My music is the music of a listener: someone who shapes and molds voices. I enjoy diverse styles of music, including jazz, art song, and singer-songwriter genres. The music I most admire combines poetry and the human voice in a moving way; this is what I aspire to in my compositions.
